John watched her go, then sighed. "So, what? That lasted a week?"

The horse nickered, then nibbled on his sleeve. Thanks. I hope you get the care you deserve.

Milady snorted. I deserve more than any human can give.

"That new stablehand: I want him out," she said, sweeping past the valet.

The man blinked. He maintained his composure remarkably well. "Miss Holmwood?"

She shook her head. She wasn't going to explain she nearly got raped for her apparent mistreatment of horses. It was too... crass. "I just want him gone. By the end of the day!"

"But the stablemaster says he's the best he's seen in a while... good with the horses." And he was damned tired of firing people. Hiring new people was hard work, and training them was even worse. "What did he do? I will see to it that he gets the proper punishment."

She made a frustrated noise. "There isn't a punishment good enough."

"May I speak to him before we make any rash decisions, Miss Holmwood? Please." She almost said no, but she caught a good look at his aging, haggard face, and pulled one of her own. She wasn't completely heartless. She hated the new stablehand, but she liked Mr. Irving. He'd always been a kind, stable rock in her childhood, even when she'd been worse than usual -- and one of the few who didn't get pulled into her pheromonal furies.

"Fine. Go. Ask him," she snorted, continuing up to her room. She was going to change and take a nice, long bath.

The valet stepped into the stables. It was a familiar, sweet smell -- he'd started working in a place like this as a lad, before he'd worked his way up. "Mr. Rein?"

John looked away from brushing Milady. "Yes, sir?"

He stepped further into the stable, a faint smile on his craggy face. "May I ask what happened here, about... five minutes ago?"

John raised a brow. "Miss Holmwood didn't tell you?"

"No," he said, with a soft laugh. "Just came in demanding your head on a platter before retiring to her room."

Hm.

"She agitated the horses, and I tried to calm her down. It didn't really work."

He frowned. "That's what upset her so much that she wants you fired?" he asked, a little disbelievingly. Then again, it was Cassandra. She didn't need a lot of reason to get furious.

John shrugged. "I might have yelled at her."

"Ah." He nodded, then laughed. "She is high-spirited," he added, neutrally.

John nodded. "She is very...high-spirited, yes." He sighed. "But she left before I could apologize. Next time I see her I'll do that." He looked at Mr. Irving. "Unless this is my last day?"

The valet sighed. "It's very hard to find new help at this time of year," he admitted. "I would very much like to keep you on. I'll try to calm her. But, Mr. Rein... please do refrain from yelling at her, if you can? People have been let go for much less where she's concerned."

John inclined his head. "Yes, sir, thank you. I'll watch myself around her from now on."

The valet smiled. "She's not all bad, you know. Try catching her in a good mood one of these days," Mr. Irving suggested. He leaned forward and patted Milady's neck gently before leaving.

John smiled as he left, then frowned and sighed. "Well that's not possible." He returned to brushing Milady's neck, thinking it might be good to start bringing Holt with him. The dog could sense her before John could.
