"Garbhan Aiden O'Malley!" Jack winced at the sound of their mother's voice, but by the time he'd turned around it was too late, she was grabbing him by the arm and nearly dragging her 12 year old son across the street. "I said stay near to me!" he sighed and apologized, looking back to see if Fionn atleast had been amused by Jack trying to outrace a horse and carriage.

"We've to find a new doctor for your brother, and here you are goofing off in the middle of the street!" Mama was going on about it now.

"Mah, I don't need a doctor...I'm fine..." he had a splitting headache, but appreciated Jack's trying to cheer him up a bit. "Just a headache. You know what the last doc said, too much light... or maybe not enough. It'll pass." He didn't want her wasting money to try and help him... he was pretty sure what caused it.

Their mother relented with a sigh. "Please, you tell me if you need one. Yes Fionn?" Finn nodded and promised, so that their mother could walk to the market. "Lets go get Pat and Seamus from School, huh Jack?"

"Yeah, sure!" Jack grinned at Fionn, more than eager to get going... as eager as he was to Not be in school anymore. He bumped playfully into Finn as he moved, smiling at him.

"You sure you're gonna be alright?" The worry was eating at him too... He'd been the one to find Finn laid out on the shop floor, hands over his eyes and holding his head with broken ceramic next to him.

The bump had sent off sparks of pain behind Finn's eyes, but he hid his wince, smiling at Jack. "Yeah, I'm alright... what you wanna be my second mother or something?" He didn't roll his eyes, knowing the nausea that it could cause when his... whatever it was, was acting up on him. It was Pat's last year of school, though he was sure he'd stay for years that weren't mandatory if Pa would let the boy.

"You think Seamus got his reading done yet?" They'd left Pat to be his tutor after Jack'd lost his temper with the energetic youngest one too many times.

"No, I don't think he did at all. Pretty sure Pa was going to fetch him half the day through, to head out to Aunt Patricia's." Jack snorted, which meant that Seamus would've doubly Not done his reading work.

Jack loved his baby brother like the rest of them did... but if he had to help him with homework one more time... he was going to strangle the younger boy.

"You think we've got time to go past the general store on the way home?" He had a fair amount of bruises from a fist fight the day before... but he'd also managed to pick up the dropped coins from the same fight...

"Think we could get a treat, right?" They'd stop to wait outside of the schoolhouse, Jack peeking in a window to just see Patrick. "Looks like Pa fetched Seamus already."

At ten, Patrick was a tall but skinny child, all elbows and knees and not much muscle to go between. He had a mop of hair falling to his shoulders the colour of freshly-peeled carrots and so many freckles some were worthy of being compared with constellations. Which, mind you, he'd been learning about from Mr. Carlo Zambini, a nice man whose son, Ricardo, was in the same class as Patrick.

Mr. Zambini was the closest young Patrick had to a friend, ignoring his best friend, his brother Jack, and his other two brothers, Finn and Seamus. It was a fair distinction, because family was a closer bond than friendship. It was blood.

So, as Jack spotted Patrick in the window, the gangly boy made his way out of the room before even some of the other children had stood up. He'd already noticed his brother's head bobbing up and had gathered his things (which weren't many, to be fair). As he passed one of the desks, he tripped (or, rather, was tripped) and almost ended up kissing the worn out wooden floor. He caught himself just in time, looked behind to see two boys laughing their butts off (they were not alone), looked forward to see the teacher - unaware of the other children's malicious contribution - shake his head in disappointment. Already bright red, Patrick left the room.

By the time he made it out of the building, only the tips of his ears retained the same bright red. The rest of him was as calm as usual.

He joined his brothers without any comment, naturally and readily.

"They're still givin him a hard time." Jack mumbled with a sidelong glance at Fionn... who he knew would already understand the issue. The two waited for Patrick to meet up with them, Jack grinning and moving to muss Pat's hair with a protective look at the rest of his classmates. "So... who's the idiots?" he'd ask quietly as he cracked the knuckles of his off had against his hip.

"Jack...." Fionn gave the next oldest a warning glare, knowing Exactly why he was popping his knuckles like that. But there was only so much fighting back for the younger two that Jack could do, before it became a problem itself.

"We oughta get goin, alright?" He'd make sure Patrick had his things, looking him over for injuries before nodding, which was a mistake as it made that pressure behind his eyes flare.

Patrick's look back was one of indifference. He was done with school for the day, so even that little show of asshollery couldn't bother him. And the little kids dared very little to mess with his bigger brothers, so they weren't following.

So, at Jack's question, he just shrugged, feigning innocence.

"Where's Ma?" he asked Finn, who, to Patrick, looked a bit pale. But that was Finn most days, which probably meant he was having a headache again. Patrick was as worried as Jack, but he was less likely of expressing it verbally.

With a little bit of a growl Jack let the other kids go for now. He frowned, as he did more and more lately now that he was growing up and started the move away from the school.

The little kids wouldn't dare do anything with Jack and Finn around... but Jack certainly knew their older siblings.

"Ma went and did some shopping, and Seamus went with Papa earlier in the day, we're on our own for supper." He shut his eyes as they moved, keeping a hand on Patrick's shoulder for just a moment until they were in the shade of a building and the sun was off of them.

"I aint hungry, but I'll make whatever you two want."

Patrick thought Finn would be better off retiring early and sleeping his migraine off. He'd never had a migraine so he couldn't understand Finn's predicament, but he knew his brother. Finn was overprotective of them and not at all protective of himself. Whatever it looked like he was feeling, it was probably ten times worse.

"So what are we doing till supper?"

"Jack wants to stop by the store for candy... and then I know he's a got a book he's looking for..." if they gave Patrick a half an hour at the library he'd be able to amuse himself just fine Finn knew. He hissed sharply as someone opened a door and the light reflected off the glass and right into Fionn's face... and then suddenly if the boys looked at each other they would't see anything.... and noone saw them either... his head was ready to split in two.

"DAMMIT FIONN!" Jack cursed as soon as he was aware of Finn on his knees.... but not able to See his brother. "Pat you stay right there." he wasn't sure if Pat knew about Finn's gift yet or not. They'd hidden it from their parents so far.

Well. This definitely didn't happen every day.

Suddenly, the world around him, and his brothers, suddenly faded into nonexistence. Was he dead? Was this what happened? Had his soul--

Jack's curse put an end to that train of thought, making way for something else. Suddenly, he understood. Only a few months ago he'd witnessed something else, something just as unexplained. He'd not confronted his brother about it because he hadn't been sure what to say. Especially since Jack seemed to know about it too but he, Patrick, had not been told.

No, what Patrick's mind next focussed on was distance. Specifically, how far would he have to walk for the world to become visible again? He could still hear it - the screams of the children across the street as they raced, the merchant's conversation with a customer, even the ring of the bell as someone entered a shop - so Patrick was certain he was still there, on the street, only his eyes had stopped seeing it. He wanted to know if it was permanent or if, somehow, by walking ahead he would escape... well... Finn.

That posed a problem.

He couldn't see. He had no intention of walking into--

Jack's voice again, telling him to stay put. He'd reached that conclusion already, but the itch was there. So he moved a little bit, only to be knocked flat off his feet by something - a something that cursed like a someone soon after impact. Patrick tried to right himself for the second time that day, but with little success. He landed with a thud on the hard ground, scraping both his knees and palms and all the curiosity was knocked out of him.

"We're going to get trampled!" he called, not without some urgency in his high, child's voice.

A not quite so gentle stumble over him had Finn finally snapping out of it a bit. It hurt worse to clamp his... whatever it was down and shut it off bt he did so at the same time that he felt Jack reach and grab what had to be Patrick judging by the voice... and then Finn himself and drag them to the side against the wall. "Sorry guys..." Finn's voice was shakey.. his eyes refused to stay open and he could taste bile in the back of his throat.

"Pat you stay right with me, understood?" Jack took a deep breath to keep his calm and hoisted Fionn up into the same carry that their Uncle Lucas used on calves at the farm. "I'll explain when we get home, alright Buddy?" he didn't often use pet names for his little brother but it just slipped out. "Finn... no more seccond helpings for you... damn."

The world blipped into existence once more and Patrick saw Jack hoist Finn up and start for home. He gathered himself off the ground and followed, hoping no one had noticed their little display.

As he walked, his hands went from stingy to numb to fine again, and so did his knees. Not that anyone, especially himself, noticed.

"You alright Pat?" Patrick, who'd never been really sick or hurt a day in his life worried Jack sick half the time.... for his own case Jack was shaking and wired... fight or flight in full effect. he'd keep look back over his shoulder to keep an eye on pat as he hurried them home.

Finn had the odd sensation of being carried like a sack of grain.... which honestly as the oldest brother he felt that Jack had no right to have the muscles to do... he was fast growing from the dreamer that he'd been into something Fionn wasn't too happy with. But as it was he thought all of that with his eyes closed to keep the bile down, and just went along for the ride with a groan.

"Get the door, would you?" Jack knew that their mother wouldn't be home yet, meaning he could get Fionn in bed before she found uot about how bad he was.

The feeling of something wet and sticky on the back of his shoulder told Jack that Finn's nose was bleeding good this time. Wonderful...

"Unnh.... put me down Jack." Fionn finally decided to say something once they'd reached the door.

"Just set me on my feet. I can walk, I swear." He sighed just a little, waiting for his request to be answered. "Promise. Besides, somebody's got explain to Patrick..."

"You're a Wonder. I get it," he sullenly said as he passed them to get the door open. He left it open and went ahead, disappearing for a few moments before reappearing with a clean cloth and handing it to Finn. "For your nose."

Only he didn't get it. He'd seen Wonders before. He'd seen a lady who soared into the sky once, right before she was about to be hit by a carriage. That had been a few years ago, but what had struck him was the ease of it. Like it was second nature.

That wasn't what he was seeing with his brother and it frankly scared him. He wasn't afraid of Finn, but he was afraid for Finn.

He took the cloth with a sigh and nodded to Patrick, signifying that Of Course, the boy was right. Fionn moved past his brothers for his bed, shoulders slumped, head down.

"Yeah, freak of nature." That was why he and Jack hadn't told anyone of course... the gloomy look Pat'd had... that said it all of course.

He set Finn down gently as the red head got the door, making sure the bigger boy could stay upright. "Welcome back to the land of the living." If nothing, Jack appreciated gallows humor.

"Patrick.... come here..." Jack headed for the kitchen as Finn walked out a moment later. While he flat out Knew that Pat couldn't hate Finn for something that wasn't his fault to begin with, watching his eldest brother deflate like he had had dropped a chunk of ice into Jack's stomach.

"Look, its not his fault." Jack sighed and ran a hand through his hair in the way that he'd starting doing when nervous.

"It was my decision not to tell you. Aint like its easy for him either way." Jack bustled around, at least getting something that would pass for a meal together for his little brother, he had no stomach for it himself at the moment.

"You alright?" he moved to get a plate and set the sandwich he'd made for Patrick on it, which let him keep his hands busy, with the added bonus of not just staring at the younger boy in worry.

Jack shoved the plate towards his little brother and then sighed. "You aren't going to say anything at all?" he asked, finally just having to look at him, arms crossed.

"You can't just hate him for it Pat. Its not his fault... not like he asked for this."
